Personal Log #16 - Accidental Voice w/ Eleytheria

"I do not understand, is it not supposed to make logical sense?"

"Hmm, I am not certain. I was told that often jokes are humorous because an individual can relate to them or they remind the person of something familiar. For it not to make sense... does that not go against that theory?"

"I am uncertain. As I can see, they are filled with grammatical errors with a 'punch line' that is a misrepresentation of the language in which it is told... Do you find anything particularly 'funny' about any of these?"

"A punch line...?" [A pause.] "Well... I do not feel the desire to laugh or smile, so I suppose not. Perhaps it really is the delivery of the words that is important."

"Hmm... another test then. Knock Knock."

"Who is there?"

"Orange."

"...orange who?"

"Are you not pleased that I did not tell you another 'knock knock' joke?" [A Pause.] "That is not right..."

"...no. What relation does that have to an orange?" [Confused Eley is confused, but after a moment's silence, he'll speak up again.] "Perhaps I can try a different kind of joke..."

"Please do."

[Time passes, but soon Eley speaks again.] "I used to be a doctor, but then I lost patients."

[A pause.] "You were a doctor? And I have always known you to have an incredible amount of patience."

"...ah, no. I was not actually a doctor. That is a part of the joke. Besides that, the word 'patience' is also referring to those the doctor cares for." [Honestly though, he's realizing now how awful a joke it is.] "...death is not funny."

"Ah, I see. I believe the joke you just told is classified as a 'pun'."

"A pun... I can only see such jokes as confusing in the long-term. How can you be sure exactly what meaning a person is aiming for?"

"Perhaps it is our grasp of the lang-- hmmm... [A pause.] It would seem that my journal has been left open..."

[Oh dear.] "Does that mean everyone has been listening to our conversation?"

"That is quite possible...."

[ooc: Replies will be done by both Eleytheria and myself~ Don't be shy to poke fun at our two fail jokers.
Spock is in Green, and Eleytheria is in Blue~]

[Eley listens intently, sifting through the story in his head as he also tries to understand it. It's then he notices something a little clever - a mistake - though he seems to completely fail to spot the punchline at the end despite this. Hey, he's trying!]

Ah, the joke... it must be that the genie misheard the request for 'bucks' and instead gave ducks to the recipient, yes? I suppose that would be a little amusing.

...I have never experienced laughter myself, being born without emotion. However, some of these human emotions have begun to surface over time. I admit that I do have feelings of amusement from time to time but they are not usually expressed outwardly. I have never laughed at anything before.

[Perhaps it was odd, but as a Spirit he was already being assaulted with sensations he should never really experience in the first place.]

You believed the jokes to be bad? May I ask why?

I would imagine that to humans they would make far more sense. Perhaps we are trying to understand something beyond our kind.

[Eley looks rather surprised himself. He'd actually told a clever joke even though he failed to understand its humour?]

Please, I would like to hear how you considered it 'funny'.

I know little of science... but are you saying that to be funny, something can be complete nonsense?

Hmm... children do like to play do they not? Perhaps you could provide some advice on how to amuse others?

[There is an audible smack as Deadpool can't help but facepalm, because seriously ]

Right. Lacking in the joke department. So yes, the mistake is the key to the joke. However it is more so that the bartender wished for a twelve inch penis, and instead got a twelve inch pianist.

[On second thought maybe he shouldn't have said anything...]

Well...it is a little morbid. But it's the play on words that makes it funny. The thing about jokes is you can't over think them. Humor isn't supposed to be a logical thing because everyone finds different things funny.

[Eley just looks rather bemused by the idea, not that he'd given much thought to... male human anatomy before.]

Yes... I have to wonder why anyone would want such a thing. Is this a common wish?

I cannot decide if it is a good or bad thing that humans can find such... cruel subjects entertaining.

[Hmm, but if it's different for everyone, maybe that goes for the more morbid humour too.]

But yes, what are some examples of things you find amusing?

Yep. It is official you both are lacking the requisite joke portion of things. Yes, a lot of dudes want bigger dicks. It is just a general truth. Ok, here is an older one. Nothing religious or sexual, just basic ridiculousness.

A man goes up to a circus to join it, he asks the boss if he can join. To which the boss asks what can you do? The man then proceeds to flap his arms up and down, up and down, moving around the big top, soaring through the air doing back flips, swirling around the whole tent before he lands, panting at the exertion. "Well?" he says to the boss. The boss gives a sniff and says "Is that all you do? Bird impressions?

[He'll pause and wait for a response, not expecting anything at this point, I mean, that one was pretty old]

It's-a nice to meet you, too! I am from-a Europa.

[And then to answer Eley's question...]

Esactly! The doctor can run out of-a patience, the word meaning-a "tolerance," but he can also run out of-a patients, the people that the doctor cares for. The "patience" and the "patients" are pronounced the same, so we just-a play around with the pronunciation.

Isn't it funny?

[Laughter as a waste of energy? Born without emotions? What weirdos, thinks the magical amphibious humanoid. She's at least learned to not say this much out loud, though.]

Do you really have so little energy that laughing would tire you out?

As for the jokes, well...for one thing, the delivery is kind of flat when you don't understand them. But I guess you have an excuse, at least, if emotions are a new thing for you.
neversurrender: ([PB] a happy atmosphere)

Well...give me a moment. I need to think of one. [His brows furrow in concentration as he searches his mind for a good example. Finally he has it.]

Okay, how about this? Why did the ants dance on the jam jar? [He pauses a couple of beats before finishing with the punchline.]

Because the lid said, "twist to open". [Pause.]...The twist is a type of dance in my world. [Maybe this wasn't such a good choice.]

Hmm... I am still not certain if I can label it as 'funny' but I can admit it is certainly clever. Perhaps one day one of these jokes will appeal to me.

[Though he was sure it would prove difficult if the subject matter was about something he wasn't particularly knowledgeable about.]

Europa... I have never heard of such a place. What is it like there?
winds_voice: (Are you sure?)

[personal profile] winds_voice 2014-02-04 04:55 pm (UTC)(link)
This is sarcasm?

[It seems like Eley is even further behind Spock when it came to this subject, but he was learning and that was what was important to him.

Unfortunately he still can't quite understand the reasoning behind this joke. He really didn't know all that much about humans after all...]

Am I to assume that the boss did not want them an to imitate a bird?
winds_voice: (More Thought Required)

[Voice]

[personal profile] winds_voice 2014-02-04 04:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Flat... so you believe that more emotion will enhance the humour?

[If that was really the case, no wonder his own delivery had been so terrible.]

Perhaps I should work on... energising my emotions in that case. Even if I cannot laugh myself, I feel that being able to amuse another would be somehow fulfilling.
winds_voice: (Curious)

[personal profile] winds_voice 2014-02-04 04:59 pm (UTC)(link)
And it is amusing for ants to be seen performing this dance?

[Yes he has no idea whether or not ants dance or not, he can't say he's really paid much attention to them before in his world...]

Things that are out of the ordinary... that are unexpected... they can be amusing, yes?

[Stefano shrugs.]

Ah well, people can-a have different sense of humor. At least you understand, so that is-a good.

Europa is-a one of the seven continents on the Earth. It's warm and wet sometimes. It has-a good food and tourism, too.
