Personal Log #16 - Accidental Voice w/ Eleytheria

"I do not understand, is it not supposed to make logical sense?"

"Hmm, I am not certain. I was told that often jokes are humorous because an individual can relate to them or they remind the person of something familiar. For it not to make sense... does that not go against that theory?"

"I am uncertain. As I can see, they are filled with grammatical errors with a 'punch line' that is a misrepresentation of the language in which it is told... Do you find anything particularly 'funny' about any of these?"

"A punch line...?" [A pause.] "Well... I do not feel the desire to laugh or smile, so I suppose not. Perhaps it really is the delivery of the words that is important."

"Hmm... another test then. Knock Knock."

"Who is there?"

"Orange."

"...orange who?"

"Are you not pleased that I did not tell you another 'knock knock' joke?" [A Pause.] "That is not right..."

"...no. What relation does that have to an orange?" [Confused Eley is confused, but after a moment's silence, he'll speak up again.] "Perhaps I can try a different kind of joke..."

"Please do."

[Time passes, but soon Eley speaks again.] "I used to be a doctor, but then I lost patients."

[A pause.] "You were a doctor? And I have always known you to have an incredible amount of patience."

"...ah, no. I was not actually a doctor. That is a part of the joke. Besides that, the word 'patience' is also referring to those the doctor cares for." [Honestly though, he's realizing now how awful a joke it is.] "...death is not funny."

"Ah, I see. I believe the joke you just told is classified as a 'pun'."

"A pun... I can only see such jokes as confusing in the long-term. How can you be sure exactly what meaning a person is aiming for?"

"Perhaps it is our grasp of the lang-- hmmm... [A pause.] It would seem that my journal has been left open..."

[Oh dear.] "Does that mean everyone has been listening to our conversation?"

"That is quite possible...."

[ooc: Replies will be done by both Eleytheria and myself~ Don't be shy to poke fun at our two fail jokers.
Spock is in Green, and Eleytheria is in Blue~]

[He grins as he addresses Spock.] I'm glad you liked it. I'm not a big fan of the more vulgar jokes myself. But like I said, everyone has different tastes.

[To Eley.] Yeah, because it's unusual and something you would never see. It's silly.
blessingone: (and to you everything will seem normal)

[She gets a little start from the "human methods" comment before she realizes that he's probably distinguishing the methods from himself rather than her -- there's no way he could know she's not human, right? Luckily, being in a three-way conversation means that her hesitation in answering is covered by Eley's response.]

With all the different places people are from, I couldn't help but have trouble with some things like that. But I also find it hard to believe someone would be so careful about how much energy they're using that they'd avoid laughing. Isn't it supposed to be good for you, or something?

And, well...more emotion wouldn't hurt. You really have to sell the joke -- [She stops, seeing a possible pitfall.] Um, not that you sell it literally. It's an expression. You have to...engage people, I guess.

[Eley gives a nod. He'd been told there were differing sense of humour, so perhaps he simply had yet to find his own.]

I would also like to know the answer to that question. Also... perhaps you could tell me something about the food there.

[If it was already available in the enclosure, perhaps he would be tempted to try it. Otherwise he could always pass on some ideas to Helios.]
sitalion: (How do dogs do that?)

Most of the animals can talk where I come from!

The food? Well, there's-a spaghetti and lasagna from Italy. Europa has different-a countries with-a different foods.

You're also using the most horrible jokes ever. Those are the jokes KIDS tell each other, not adults.

...Because it's for fun! It's just kinda whatever makes you laugh or smile! Like, okay! What do you give a sick bird?

[ GUESS. ]

]Eley's still interested in the food now he's gotten onto the subject, though he's keeping one ear open on the other side of the conversation.]

Hmm... I have not heard of those foods. Perhaps I can find some to try here. Do you have a preference to one or the other? Perhaps a favourite that you have no mentioned yet?

[Good job Fenimore, you managed to avoid confusing Eley about that prospective sales pitch.]

Engage... It has to be of interest to others. It has to catch their attention. Perhaps the way I am now... humans are bored of me.

[He knew how to gather attention from humans at least, but he'd never done it with something like a joke before. Could he perhaps merge his past skills together with new ones? Now, the Spirit seems thoughtful.]

You mention silliness... I was told that it can help to laugh at yourself, should you do something that is considered as such. That you can find your own failings humorous.

But... how do you avoid embarrassment in that case?
sitalion: (Isn't it fun?)

No, no, we still function-a like animals. The animals still live in a zoo, live in a circus, or live in the wild. We don't speak-a with humans much. Even-a then, the humans may not even-a hear us.

I don't-a have a food preference. It's all good, no? In-a fact, Luceti sound-a like an Italian name.

People often laugh at themselves after they do something wrong or have an accident as a way to defuse the situation. If you laugh at yourself before anyone can laugh at you, then they can only laugh with you. That way you're not the thing being laughed at, just your previous actions.

It's...a little hard to explain. I hope that made sense.

I would assume some kind of medicine... perhaps a herbal remedy.

[Somehow he can't imagine that would be the right answer though. There was nothing funny about sickness and medicine, was there?]

You give it "tweetment"!

[If they weren't doing voice, Spock would also see her side-eye that comment. Deeming laughter "an illogical function" seems super-weird to her, and maybe a little silly. But she'll keep that thought inside.]

I didn't mean that people would be bored of you. That's a little harsh, isn't it? It's just that -- I guess laughter is an emotional reaction, so you have to appeal to people's emotions to put them in the mood to laugh. But it also does have to interest them.

Hmm... what exactly is a circus?

[Eley knew they existed in Aether but he couldn't say he'd paid much attention to them himself. Now it had been mentioned, he was curious.]

[Eley just throws him back a rather intrigued expression. The amusement in his friend's face didn't go entirely unnoticed and he had to wonder how serious Spock was being when he asked that question.

...was this a part of the humour he was trying to learn about?]

Yes... tell us some jokes that you would not consider horrible.

There is a difference between someone laughing 'at' and 'with' you?

[Oh dear... somehow that just sounds like another complication to Eley. How was he supposed to know which kind of laughter they were utilising?]

It seems as thought it would be difficult to separate the two.
