Personal Log #16 - Accidental Voice w/ Eleytheria

"I do not understand, is it not supposed to make logical sense?"

"Hmm, I am not certain. I was told that often jokes are humorous because an individual can relate to them or they remind the person of something familiar. For it not to make sense... does that not go against that theory?"

"I am uncertain. As I can see, they are filled with grammatical errors with a 'punch line' that is a misrepresentation of the language in which it is told... Do you find anything particularly 'funny' about any of these?"

"A punch line...?" [A pause.] "Well... I do not feel the desire to laugh or smile, so I suppose not. Perhaps it really is the delivery of the words that is important."

"Hmm... another test then. Knock Knock."

"Who is there?"

"Orange."

"...orange who?"

"Are you not pleased that I did not tell you another 'knock knock' joke?" [A Pause.] "That is not right..."

"...no. What relation does that have to an orange?" [Confused Eley is confused, but after a moment's silence, he'll speak up again.] "Perhaps I can try a different kind of joke..."

"Please do."

[Time passes, but soon Eley speaks again.] "I used to be a doctor, but then I lost patients."

[A pause.] "You were a doctor? And I have always known you to have an incredible amount of patience."

"...ah, no. I was not actually a doctor. That is a part of the joke. Besides that, the word 'patience' is also referring to those the doctor cares for." [Honestly though, he's realizing now how awful a joke it is.] "...death is not funny."

"Ah, I see. I believe the joke you just told is classified as a 'pun'."

"A pun... I can only see such jokes as confusing in the long-term. How can you be sure exactly what meaning a person is aiming for?"

"Perhaps it is our grasp of the lang-- hmmm... [A pause.] It would seem that my journal has been left open..."

[Oh dear.] "Does that mean everyone has been listening to our conversation?"

"That is quite possible...."

[ooc: Replies will be done by both Eleytheria and myself~ Don't be shy to poke fun at our two fail jokers.
Spock is in Green, and Eleytheria is in Blue~]

And what are you... if you do not mind me asking?

[Not because it was a problem, he was honestly just curious.]

I also fail to understand how this 'play on words' is considered funny... Would it not just lead to greater confusion when trying to talk to people?

My name is-a Stefano. I am a sea lion.

[The fact that so many people are asking him just what he is is puzzling.]

[Now how to explain a joke to people who don't seem to have any idea...]

Ehh...jokes are not supposed to make-a sense. But it's not-a confusing when you know the relevance of-a the subject and the punchline. Like-a the doctor and the patience, for esample.

[While Eley was rather intrigued by the talking sea-lion himself, he's still trying to keep the subject on track. So the jokes weren't especially bad? He supposed it was a good thing that at least someone was entertained by them.]

Then knowledge and context also go part-way toward understanding a joke? I suppose that would make sense...

It's-a nice to meet you, too! I am from-a Europa.

[And then to answer Eley's question...]

Esactly! The doctor can run out of-a patience, the word meaning-a "tolerance," but he can also run out of-a patients, the people that the doctor cares for. The "patience" and the "patients" are pronounced the same, so we just-a play around with the pronunciation.

Isn't it funny?

Hmm... I am still not certain if I can label it as 'funny' but I can admit it is certainly clever. Perhaps one day one of these jokes will appeal to me.

[Though he was sure it would prove difficult if the subject matter was about something he wasn't particularly knowledgeable about.]

Europa... I have never heard of such a place. What is it like there?

[Stefano shrugs.]

Ah well, people can-a have different sense of humor. At least you understand, so that is-a good.

Europa is-a one of the seven continents on the Earth. It's warm and wet sometimes. It has-a good food and tourism, too.

[Eley gives a nod. He'd been told there were differing sense of humour, so perhaps he simply had yet to find his own.]

I would also like to know the answer to that question. Also... perhaps you could tell me something about the food there.

[If it was already available in the enclosure, perhaps he would be tempted to try it. Otherwise he could always pass on some ideas to Helios.]
sitalion: (How do dogs do that?)

Most of the animals can talk where I come from!

The food? Well, there's-a spaghetti and lasagna from Italy. Europa has different-a countries with-a different foods.

]Eley's still interested in the food now he's gotten onto the subject, though he's keeping one ear open on the other side of the conversation.]

Hmm... I have not heard of those foods. Perhaps I can find some to try here. Do you have a preference to one or the other? Perhaps a favourite that you have no mentioned yet?
sitalion: (Isn't it fun?)

No, no, we still function-a like animals. The animals still live in a zoo, live in a circus, or live in the wild. We don't speak-a with humans much. Even-a then, the humans may not even-a hear us.

I don't-a have a food preference. It's all good, no? In-a fact, Luceti sound-a like an Italian name.

Hmm... what exactly is a circus?

[Eley knew they existed in Aether but he couldn't say he'd paid much attention to them himself. Now it had been mentioned, he was curious.]
sitalion: (Huh)

[personal profile] sitalion 2014-02-07 03:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, I do live in a circus!

[He says this with great pride, but then Eley's question comes, his jaw nearly drops.]

You've-a never seen a circus? Where have you been?!

[He clears his throat, preparing to give the most awesome circus sales pitch ever.]

A circus is a traveling company, with many fearless performers, human and animal alike. They perform-a various tricks to stun-a the audience! We make-a good classico family entertainment!

[...Well, not as dramatic as he wanted it to be, but maybe he got the idea across?]

[While Eley was intrigued to hear about these tricks that animals could potentially perform, Spock's last question leaves him looking a bit surprised.]

Why would they be ill-treated? Surely they would revere animals with such unusual talents.
sitalion: (Uh oh)

[personal profile] sitalion 2014-02-10 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I can-a juggle and-a balance on a ball at the same time!

[And he can fall on his face while doing it, too! How cool is that?]

[Then suddenly, his tone becomes melancholy.]

We were-a treated well, until the owners sold the circus. Now we fend-a for ourselves.
