Personal Log #16 - Accidental Voice w/ Eleytheria

"I do not understand, is it not supposed to make logical sense?"

"Hmm, I am not certain. I was told that often jokes are humorous because an individual can relate to them or they remind the person of something familiar. For it not to make sense... does that not go against that theory?"

"I am uncertain. As I can see, they are filled with grammatical errors with a 'punch line' that is a misrepresentation of the language in which it is told... Do you find anything particularly 'funny' about any of these?"

"A punch line...?" [A pause.] "Well... I do not feel the desire to laugh or smile, so I suppose not. Perhaps it really is the delivery of the words that is important."

"Hmm... another test then. Knock Knock."

"Who is there?"

"Orange."

"...orange who?"

"Are you not pleased that I did not tell you another 'knock knock' joke?" [A Pause.] "That is not right..."

"...no. What relation does that have to an orange?" [Confused Eley is confused, but after a moment's silence, he'll speak up again.] "Perhaps I can try a different kind of joke..."

"Please do."

[Time passes, but soon Eley speaks again.] "I used to be a doctor, but then I lost patients."

[A pause.] "You were a doctor? And I have always known you to have an incredible amount of patience."

"...ah, no. I was not actually a doctor. That is a part of the joke. Besides that, the word 'patience' is also referring to those the doctor cares for." [Honestly though, he's realizing now how awful a joke it is.] "...death is not funny."

"Ah, I see. I believe the joke you just told is classified as a 'pun'."

"A pun... I can only see such jokes as confusing in the long-term. How can you be sure exactly what meaning a person is aiming for?"

"Perhaps it is our grasp of the lang-- hmmm... [A pause.] It would seem that my journal has been left open..."

[Oh dear.] "Does that mean everyone has been listening to our conversation?"

"That is quite possible...."

[ooc: Replies will be done by both Eleytheria and myself~ Don't be shy to poke fun at our two fail jokers.
Spock is in Green, and Eleytheria is in Blue~]

[And things only get stranger as a sea lion answers the feed, laughing quite excitedly.]

Hahaha, yes! Those are good-a jokes!

[Eley isn't really sure what he's looking at, other than some kind of animal, but it wasn't the first time he'd seen other creatures here before. It seemed able to talk at least, and somehow seemed to have more of a sense of humour than they did.]

Perhaps they are familiar jokes... even if we did not quite use the correct wording or tone.

Jokes are kind of a foreign tongue to you boys aren't they?

Here let me lay one on ya.

Murphy is sitting on a plane beside a Muslim. The flight attendant asks if he would like a whisky, and he eagerly replies "yes I would". She then asks the Muslim beside him if he would like a whiskey, to which the Muslim, offended by the offer because of his religion, angrily replies "Why not just offer me two flaming whores instead?" At this Murphy startled says "I didn't know that was an option!! Can I change me order?!"

[He does the appropriate voices and actions as well]

No, no, no, no need to worry about-a tone. It's a play on the words themselves that is-a the joke!

[Well, she laughs, at least. Not at the jokes, but, rather, at their difficulties with the jokes and at their realization that their conversation has been recorded.]

I don't think you're supposed to figure out jokes with logic and reasoning. They're supposed to either be funny to you or not.

And what are you... if you do not mind me asking?

[Not because it was a problem, he was honestly just curious.]

I also fail to understand how this 'play on words' is considered funny... Would it not just lead to greater confusion when trying to talk to people?
winds_voice: (What?)

[Most of that joke went way over Eley's head unfortunately and he looks rather more bemused than offended by anything that was said.]

I am afraid I fail to see how that was amusing... though I admit I have little understanding of what was mentioned in the joke.

[Eley could say the same about himself, despite trying to investigate these things lately. Maybe he really was destined not to have a sense of humour in the first place.]

There is no way to instigate laughter then? It seems it is a natural and spontaneous reaction... and not something that can be forced.

My name is-a Stefano. I am a sea lion.

[The fact that so many people are asking him just what he is is puzzling.]

[Now how to explain a joke to people who don't seem to have any idea...]

Ehh...jokes are not supposed to make-a sense. But it's not-a confusing when you know the relevance of-a the subject and the punchline. Like-a the doctor and the patience, for esample.

[To Spock's question:] Then you have a bad sense of humour. [SRY 2 SAY]

[And then to Eley's question, although from the sounds of the conversation there, it probably addresses both of them:]

Have you really never laughed at anything? I mean, there are plenty of jokes that I don't find funny, like, um, well...the jokes you were trying were kind of bad. But surely you must have run across something that amused you, right?

[A sigh]

Yeah, alright. Let me try another one for you. It might be a lost cause. You may have both been born without the requisite joke bone.

[A clearing of the throat]

A man walks into a bar, and notices that there is this man who is only about a foot tall, playing this tiny piano. He goes up to the bartender, and asks "how did that little man come to be?" The bartender replies "There is a genie in the juke box which grants wishes. Just go up to it and see for yourself." The man, a little skeptical goes up to the juke box, and sure enough a genie appears. "You can have one wish" the genie states. The man thinking for a second says " I wish I had a million bucks!". The genie nods his head, disappears and then the room starts filling with ducks who all fly out of the bar.

The man turns to the bartender and goes "I didn't ask for that!" To which the bartender replies "Yeah, and I didn't ask for a 12 inch pianist"

[If they don't get this one, it has been confirmed]

[ His head is in his hands and it's a toss up if he's weeping or if he's laughing or both. ]

And this is why Vulcan's will never write a joke book...

To be honest, I thought the doctor joke was pretty clever.

I think you guys are overthinking this a LOT. Funny stuff doesn't have to be logical or whatever!! It's not like it's science or something.

[ Like you're making it seem like homework or something how do you even. ]

[While Eley was rather intrigued by the talking sea-lion himself, he's still trying to keep the subject on track. So the jokes weren't especially bad? He supposed it was a good thing that at least someone was entertained by them.]

Then knowledge and context also go part-way toward understanding a joke? I suppose that would make sense...
