Personal Log #6...4th Wall

[Spock was.... rather curious at the unexpected influx of individuals without wings...

In his mind, the Vulcan was making theories that included black holes, transporters, ion storms...It was frustrating that the nature of this world made it impossible to pin down any one theory.

Spock can be found traveling to the Dome in the morning, and working there for the rest of the day.
In the evening the Vulcan's curiosity gets the better of him and he stops by Seventh Heaven to see who all is there.]

[Stares at Spock for a bit. Sustenance... and offering to get him things. You are interesting.]

A chocolate milk? Oh! Or strawberry milk please!

[Cheeps down, wondering if overdid it and adds in a quiet voice:] Thank you!

What will you have? [Acting like he owns the place... Oh wait, Marco does that everywhere.]

[Spock gives Marco a half-smile...He doesn't mind at all.]

Very well, I will get a chocolate and a strawberry milk.... and then we can share...

Are you amenable to this?

Aye! Please and thank you!

[Happily swishes his tail.]

So how long have we been friends Mister?

[Spock nods, and goes to the counter... soon return with a chocolate and a strawberry milk.

He puts the strawberry milk in front of Marco.

The Vulcan takes a sip of his own chocolate drink, enjoying the flavour.]

Nothing formal was declared... but I have considered us friends for approximately two months. [Spock was new to friendship...So of course he would be a little awkward about it.]

[No worries, Marco himself is still getting used to people, at this stage, much less friends.]

[And he cheerfully sips his milk before beaming happily.]

Wow! That's a long time! [He thinks about it, trying to do some calculations to compare it to something other than 1/6th of a year, or 8-9 weeks.] What month is it now? Does this whole island move? I didn't think sky islands could move! But I didn't think sky islands had land either and this one does! But it's so strange, it was summer here, and now there's snow! So the island must move, right?!

[He talks. Apparently a bunch even.]

[Spock continues to sip his chocolate milk... a pleased smile plastered on his face as he listens to his friend.]

It is January... the middle of winter. You are in Luceti, a world that is not an island.

I am unsure of its planetary movements... [Spock moves his finger on the table, as if drawing an equation...] ...because this planet is really confusing...

A whole world not an island?! [Makes a little :O face.]

Why didn't they just say that before? No wonder Papa will have such a tough time breaking through the barrier! He'll have to find the rabbit hole I crawled through, and he's too big for that!

Are you used to tracking planet movements normally? [Follows the finger and cocks his head to the side.]

I am used to much more than tracking planet movements. [Spock takes another large gulp of chocolate milk...] I am the head science officer on board the Starship Enterprise...

[Spock looks at his young companion, and leans close for emphasis...] We travel the stars.

What? REALLY?! Are you like.... space pirates?! [ALL the excited.]

I'm only first division commander on Pops' ship! But I was first so that makes me first mate, yoi. [Because that is how it works, okay.]

[Spock blinks at Marco...]

I am also the First Officer... which in pirate terms makes me a first mate too....

[A big grin suddenly appears on Spock's face... And he does something that he's seen people do around Luceti.... he presents his fist in a 'pound it' motion.]

[He thinks about the hand gesture for a moment, he's old all right? Normally it's a high-five! But after a few seconds he figures out how to give a teeny fist bump with a small laugh.]

That makes you one of the First Mate club then! You can tell Ray-Ray Silvers if you ever meet him.

It is our sol-em-n duty to uphold making sure that when our captains are out picking up chicks or getting in trouble that the rest of the crew doesn't do anything dumb like they are wont to do. [This speech would have more oomph if he wasn't tiny as heck. Also if he didn't think this meant that his Pops goes out and collects baby chickens. Young bishie Whitebeard was obviously a chick magnet.]

[Spock is pleased when the fist meets his... and goes back to drinking his chocolate milk... even going so far as to order another one.]

That is a very accurate statement Mister Marco... it is indeed our job to take care of the crew when the Captain cannot. Also.... [Spock leans in conspiratorially... and whispers...]

...it's our job to keep the Captain safe. And sometimes I find that very difficult.

[His eyes widen and he quickly nods, and whispers back just as conspiratorially.]

I'm lucky. My Pops is the strongest ever. So even though lots of idiots try to fight him, they can't hurt him.

Oh, but Ray-Ray has that problem too. His captain's a little.... [Dense, dumb, insane, oh the words Marco has to describe Gold Roger...] Crazy. But it's okay! I think sometimes even if death or injury happens, that's why we're around to keep going after them, eh? That's why Pops said I'm his son. [NOD!]

That is correct... that is why we are out Captain's first mates... to keep going after them.

I am glad though that your father is so strong... My Captain is too... but he is not careful. I am... scared for him often.

What do you do when you're scared? [Spock folds his arms on the table, looking at his young companion...]

Aye!

[But the grin drops and he shifts uncomfortably. He hasn't mastered the art of lying the way his older self has, much less hiding every emotion or thought ever. Still, it makes him nervous so he has to think on it for a bit to answer. He wants to say he doesn't scared. Nothing scares him. Except losing his Pops. And wasn't his first mate club buddy the same? Still, he has to at least switch back into bird form for the comfort of it.]

I go to Papa. Always. If I protect anything that would get hurt he'll be fine... right?

I can't protect him if he gets sick, but I'll work hard and get us the best doctors and nurses ever. And I'll kick anyone who hurts him.

[He looks up.] I don't know if that helps, but you haveta keep going. No matter what. Pops told me he's so strong because he never ever retreats a step no matter what. Because he knows me and the others, we'll be behind him and he has to protect us so he lets us protect his back. So it's the same for me, yoi. If I protect him, then I can't let myself lose... I think.

[He frowns. He knows he loses his father eventually, but it's a good thirty years later by his time. Still, even here, even now, even knowing that, it's scary. There's nothing he can do about it, no way to stop time. He shakes his head and mumbles into his milk as he finishes it up.] Gotta make the most of every day, yoi. I'm not good at that yet, but I'll get better.

[Spock does reach over now, fluffing the youth's hair...]

You are very brave Marco... much braver than I.

[Shifts about and puffs up his feathers.]

No... I just have a lot of faith in my Papa. Why, what do you do?

I...

I do the logical thing. [Spock actually looks kind of sad at this....]

There are lots of people, including my Captain, that do not like it when I'm logical.

[Sad face.] Why not?

My Captain has said that I am a 'kill joy'...

I do not understand what this means...

[Spock looks at the Phoenix's sad face... and sits up..] I apologise, I did not mean to make you sad.

[THAT HE GIGGLES AT. And shakes his head.]

No no! That's what being first mate means! We have to stop them from being dumb, yoi!

My little brothers call me their mother hen sometimes. Because they're idiots. [Look at this hand-sized bird and imagine him sarcastically being called Mom by a bunch of pirates. Either he's lying, the pirates are babies, or phoenixes have weird time cycles and bodies. Probably that.]

Oh and Ray's always having to smack Shanks and that idiot clown together! They call him a killjoy too! [Gets up to get another milk and a croissant.]

So don't worry! That just means you're doing it right, yoi!

[Spock huffs into his almost finished chocolate milk....]

I do not like being a kill-joy...

But... I thank you for your optimism, I appreciate it.

[Spock blushes a bit... then looks around to make sure no one else is listening...

...then leans close conspiratorially again, lowering his voice.] Can I.... can I tell you a secret?

You're not really being one. They are just being whiny. Don't worry, they'll get over it. It's for their own good, yoi!

[Nods!] Aye! First mate honor. [Have a teeny fist bump again.]

[Spock gently presses his fist against the tiny one... then looks around once more before leaning in again....]

I think....

I think I like my Captain.

[Hand over his mouth and whispers back excitedly.] I like my captain too, yoi!

[And before Spock can explain he means romantically (whether or not that's the case)...] Are you going to be Valentines together?
