Personal Log #18 - [Action - All Day]

The Dome:

[One of the simulator doors is wide open for anyone to see inside, and for the most part, the room is empty... except for a tv, and a large couch; the back of which is facing the door. For anyone who knows the Vulcan well, they'll recognize the cap of neat, black hair sticking above the back of the couch. What will seem odd though are the sounds coming from the room...

...sounds, for those who would recognize them, that resemble something like video games from the mid eighties to early nineties.

If anyone dares to venture into the room and walks around the couch, they'll see the floor littered with games for the various consoles set up by the tv. Currently, Spock is engrossed with Super Mario Bros for the SNES, his eyebrows and mouth fixated in a scary looking frown as he navigates through the levels.]

[ooc: Spock has been gone for just about two weeks, and is now suffering under a inconvenient effect: he's addicted to video games. For those who would like to jump in on this, there are extra controllers. *hint hint*

[For awhile, the white-gowned woman (Ami?) simply watches Spock playing the simulation game, saying nothing as her sharp eyes take in every detail. Either she is politely avoiding causing a distraction, or she is highly focused. It would be hard to say which, at first.

That the simulation is of a type of game is easy to tell, but she has never seen one quite like it before. ]

[Spock knows that someone is watching him, and he doesn't bother to turn around... he's too into the game.]

It would be much appreciated if you would please identify yourself.

[She's a little surprised, then she realized it's just that he's engrossed in the game - or perhaps another effect of the Malnosso's ~~blundering~~ experimental attempts.]

Mercury. [She identifies herself as briefly and succinctly as possible.] Excuse me. I didn't mean to intrude. I was watching you play; this game seems interesting.

[Spock actually pauses the game to look around. That is Ami, but it's also not. He believes this has happened before, but not that he's seen.
Instead of questioning it, the Vulcan nods.]

Mercury, please, join me. [Spock gestures at the piles of games and various consoles on the floor.]

Would you care to pick a game?

[Mercury gives a polite nod, but she demures from choosing a game.]

All of these are completely unfamiliar to me; which one would be suitable to start?

[She'd probably choose the one Spock was just playing. After all, she had the chance to watch him.]

[Spock hands her a controller.] Very well, we shall start with this game. It would be easier for you to figure out what the buttons do for yourself. It is not difficult.

[He wonders what's happening to Miss Ami.]

[She examines the controller for only another moment before she thinks she's ready. The game stages follow a pattern she's been able to identify, although when she reaches stages she hasn't seen, it'll become more difficult. ]

Shall we begin, then?

[Spock plays until he loses a life with Mario, then it becomes Mercury's turn. The Vulcan looks over, wondering how long it will take her to get used to the game. He's completely prepared to have his turn again soon.]

[It turns out not to be soon at all. Mercury whips through the levels as if all the practice had been hers, instead of only the watching. She isn't as smooth in the higher levels, but she's gotten the basic patterns of the game by then and she hops, skips, and jumps her little Luigi through his obstacles, only pausing briefly whenever she needs to learn another rhythm of the enemy movements, or moving platforms. Her lips curve upward as she starts to enjoy herself.]

[Spock watches with attention, amazed at how quickly Ami has taken to this game. Though he really shouldn't be surprised, she's a remarkably intelligent being...
The Vulcan begins to muse as he sees Ami's growing joy in playing a game. There's so much he missed out on as a child. To be a human child, and not pressured to pursue a certain path; to not be constantly criticized that he was never enough, and could never be the perfect Vulcan his father wanted.
Spock shakes his head. Where had those thoughts come from?

He looks at Ami again, and sees someone he can relate to. Someone who grew up with a responsibility, and was never really given the opportunity to goof off and have 'fun'. Someone who finds the very concept of fun awkward and unnatural.

He is in good company. And maybe, for the first time in however long, Spock feels like he's enjoying himself.

[It is fun, a change from equations and mathematical formulae, a very... well, a very human pastime, she thinks, although humans in what she thinks of as her own time are not yet nearly as advanced.

Not much has changed about this, from Mizuno Ami who was always working hard to become a doctor, to the princess of Mercury who was always trained to become a guardian and a ruler. She has always carried responsibility on her shoulders like a heavy winter cloak.

When she finally completes the game, she seems to realize just how immersed she became, and she looks almost apologetically to Spock.]

Excuse me; I didn't intend to take so long. [By which she means she really should have intentionally died sooner, to give him back his turn. But she has a competitive streak, too, even as she is now.]

(and for fun, Ami's first video game)

[Spock gives her a small smile.]

There is no need to apologise, it is part of the game. [Spock was kind of trying to figure out what the purpose of this affect was, and maybe it was to just be. Though that didn't really settle well with the Vulcan.
He takes up his controller and tries his hardest to beat Ami's amazing high score.

They'll have the game wrapped in no time at this rate.]

I meant to ask before, are you aware of who Ami Mizuno is?

[That's the tricky question, really. After a second, Mercury decides to give the simplest true answer.]

I was told she is a 'different me'.

[As odd as it would sound elsewhere, in Luceti that's fairly common to encounter.]

I see. Then, will you tell me more about yourself?

[Her personality can't be that much different than Ami's. Spock muses as he continues on through his levels, actually using a cheat to get to one of the special levels.]

[After seeing where the cheats were placed as Spock played, there was no need to use them herself; she would have done so from curiosity, after all. She liked playing through the game on her own, through each level.]

There isn't a lot to tell, I'm afraid. Like you, I was brought here from my home planet some time ago.

[Spock lets the question tumble out of his mouth.]

Is that planet Earth?

I was born on planet Mercury, but I lived on the Moon. [She corrects herself quickly to specify:] Earth's moon.

[Well then, that was unexpected. Spock blinks at her...]

Fascinating.
[In his universe, Mercury was not an inhabitable planet. And the moon? Not a kingdom.]

What was it like, living there?

[It's very different in later eras of her world. She knows that vaguely after speaking with Mars and Venus, but it's something hard for her to take in.]

It was a beautiful time.

You must miss it.

[Spock can't help but remember Vulcan. He wonders if anything happened to Mercury's home-world.]

[Not yet. In her time, it's still a kingdom of beauty and light, watching over the other planets, and especially the chosen sacred planet Earth.]

I do. I miss my companions, and most of all, my princess.

[Spock's turn ends with a badly timed goomba...but he finds that he wants to know more.]

Who is your princess?

The moon princess. [Whatever time she thinks she's spent in Luceti hasn't fully prepared her for someone questioning what to her is so perfectly clear and unchangeable.]

Princess Serenity.

[Spock gives her a curious look. Whoever this Princess Serenity is, it sounds as though Mercury loves her very much.
He wants to know more, to ask Mercury more questions... but there's something preventing him from getting away from video games. Part of him hates himself for it...]

Shall we try another game?

[For her, it's a novelty still, and she hasn't quite noticed Spock's obsession since it's fairly natural to play a couple matches of any game, when there's time. ~~You should see how she can spend a day on chess.~~]

Certainly. I find the games from Earth very entertaining.
